Contract with Vermont
Posted by Muffuletta
Is my timing good, or is irony an everyday thing in Vermont? I arrived this morning, and here was the front page story in the Burlington Free Press:
There was a certain irony in the recent demise of the College Republicans at the University of Vermont. What ultimately proved to be the club’s undoing was an appearance on campus by a national Republican heavyweight: Newt Gingrich.
The amount of Newt’s 2005 honorarium was “undisclosed,” but apparently it was more than the kids had.

Well, you have to give them some credit for sticking to their guns: they could have raised taxes to pay for it.

The Republican way is to stick it to the next “generation,” which may be what happened. The Gingrich talk was in 2005. There’s probably some ace out there who graduated in 2006 and put on his resume, “I procured funding to bring former Speaker Newt Gingrich to our campus.” Meanwhile the campus entities that loaned them the money have decided they’re tired of waiting to be paid back.

I’d laugh if I didn’t think that were true. As a slight aside, you might want to check out this fairly recent MetaFilter post.
