Spiegel Online:

According to the recipe, the meat was to be cut into small pieces or slices, sprinkled with “myrrh and at least a little bit of aloe” and then soaked in spirits of wine for a few days.

Johann Schröder, a German pharmacologist, wrote these words in the 17th century. But the meat to which he was referring was not cured ham or beef tenderloin. The instructions specifically called for the “cadaver of a reddish man … of around 24 years old,” who had been “dead of a violent death but not an illness” and then laid out “exposed to the moon rays for one day and one night” with, he noted, “a clear sky.”

For the humans co-ordination is important, but for the zombies it’s absolutely vital. Slower than the living (and with only a couple of seconds of “lunge” ability), the zombies must use teamspeak servers to flank their opponents. It feels odd to charge a machine-gunning foe with nothing but your rotting fingers - but the fact that you’ll come back from the dead is good. Watching your teammates creeping up behind your killer with your meaningless life as a distraction is better. And the fact that your newly-zombified former enemy will then help you kill his former teammates is absolutely priceless.

How have I never heard of this?! Link! Via Reddit.

Zombie outbreak on Twitter (0)

Just after announcing their horror-themed reality series Scream Queens, VH1 is giving us something else to scream about. America’s Next Top Zombie Idol, a mockumentary written and directed by Attack of the Show’s Blair Butler, will set itself in a house of eight zombies living together and competing for the title of… zombie idol?

They should get Bub from Day of the Dead to be a celebrity judge. Read on.

This is a pretty solid list, until number one… I’m sorry, it’s a fine film, but I think it’s a stretch to call Ghostbusters horror.

they advocate cannibalism. Ok, ok. So it’s only a Fox affiliate, but I can’t help but kick them when they’re down. Well, not down precisely, but they do need to scramble.

This article is a fairly standard, albeit well-written, list of the “top 10 zombie films of all time.” Any list that claims to be the top ten of anything is bound to attract critics, but I find little to quibble with here (other than Night of the Living Dead not being number one). The only reason it stands out to me is this line, regarding Jacques Torneur’s I Walked With a Zombie, which puts rather simply something I’ve struggled to articulate to people:

This may be a creaky, outdated and depraved representation of ‘The Islands,’ but only in the same way that Conrad uses the Congo or Philip K. Dick the future. Stories have to be set somewhere and it’s only right they use the fears of the day to express themselves.

I’ll think of this next time I hear about people getting their panties in a bunch over something like a Song of the South re-release.
